PVC Pipes as a storage option for 90% coins

I was wondering if there are any contraindications for storing 90% coins in PVC pipes with caps on the end? The bags they come in are too heavy and putting them in rolls makes it an issue also carrying them. I read just recently that if you store them in PVC that the chemicals in it will turn all the coins green. Can anyone confirm or deny? The Pipes makes it a lot easier to carry to the hole in my back yard (that is.... for the 10 or 20 coins that I do have).

Why not just a glass jar buried upside down?

PVC sandwich bags have plasticisizers that make the PVC soft and pliable. It is the plasticisizers that give coins the green slime.

I don't know if the hard PVC will do it.

If you do try it, it would be a good idea to not let the PVC touch the metal.

I have some PVC pieces out in my garage. I may set up an experiment with some nickels and dimes.

I think Ross is right on this one........that the plasticizers chemical reaction with the PVC is what causes the "green slime" effect over time, same as the problems with the older style plastic "flips". Never heard of that problem with the hard PVC pipe being used for "midnight gardners", but you can always leave the coins in a canvas bag to keep them out of contact with the plastic to be on the safe side. Also, drop in desiccant packets are a good idea before you seal them up to keep things as dry as possible. You might even heat the coins up good with a hot hairdryer before putting them in the tube for a little added moisture protection.

It occurred to me that storing large quantities of silver could be achieved by casting a safe in solid silver and painting it black. You then have somewhere safe to store your gold too..

Why not eliminate the question by passing on the PVC, and using black ABS pipe that's primarily designed for underground use?
